Small Faces CDs
[editor’s note: there’s a bewildering number of quasi-legal and absolutely illegal Small Faces products on the market–especially considering their limited official output. These are some that the bandmembers and families get paid for, therefore we recommend you limit your purchases to these.]
THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION
(Sanctuary, 2003)

A 2-disc collection of the band’s best material, authorized by the band themselves.
The Ultimate Collection

SMALL FACES (35th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)
(Castle Music Ltd., 2002)

A two-disc collection that comprises the mono and stereo versions of their first Immediate Records album from 1967 (which many feel is the band’s best), filled out with all the odd tracks, outtakes, and unfinished backing tracks that the band themselves would like to erase from their recorded output if ’twere possible. Together with a version of Odgens’, this disc will give you almost the entire recorded Immediate catalog, released and unreleased.
Small Faces 35th Anniversary Deluxe Edition
OGDENS’ NUT GONE FLAKE
(Fuel 2000, 2002, American)

The best-sounding stereo version of the 1968 classic, with all the live 1968 tracks added as a bonus. Probably now out of print, but excellent if you can find it.
Ogden’ Nut Gone Flake
THE IMMEDIATE ALBUMS
(Castle Music Ltd., 2005)

The three original Immediate albums (Small Faces, Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake, and The Autumn Stone) repackaged in a box.
Small Faces Immediate Albums Collection
OGDENS’ NUT GONE FLAKE
(Castle Music Ltd., 2006)

The original album in mono and stereo (two discs) along with a 3rd disc of a radio program documenting the album, nicely packaged in a recreation of the original album in a metal tin.
Ogden’ Nut Gone Flake

Ronnie Lane & Slim Chance CDs
[Editor’s note: since Lane’s death in 1997, most of his albums–out of print in his lifetime–have now been reissued on CD, often with bonus tracks. In addition, there have been a confusing myriad of quasi-legitimate and outright bootleg releases of his material, including pirated copies with new covers and titles of CDs that may themselves have been legit. The Estate hopes to rectify this situation in the future with a series of authorized releases. Meanwhile, the only ones I can whole-heartedly recommend are the ones I know The Estate (i.e. Ronnie’s family) gets paid for. Sorry to take this tack, I own most everything myself, and love some of them, but if the family doesn’t get paid ....
All the Warners/Rhino Faces releases and all releases with/by Pete Townshend are authorized.]

Just For A Moment
Peter Townshend & Ronnie Lane
Pete Townshend and Ronnie Lane made a series of three privately released albums for the Meher Baba Society. These are:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
(Meher Baba Society, 1969, limited edition of 500 copies)

I AM
(Meher Baba Society, 1970, limited edition of 1500 copies)

WITH LOVE
(Meher Baba Society, 1974, limited edition of 3000 copies)

We won’t list all the tracks and artists here, but Ronnie plays and sings on all three albums. "Evolution," his track about Baba’s chart of how evolution happened, appeared originally on the first album. "Just For A Moment," recorded for the Mahoney’s Last Stand album, was first released on "With Love." So two of Lane’s all-time best tracks were first released on these CDs.

We highly recommend the two-disc reissue of all the music on these albums, JAI BABA, which can be purchased directly from Eel Pie Productions and also the AVATAR boxed set which reproduced all three albums in their entirety, also available through Eel Pie productions, although it seems to now be out of print. WHO CAME FIRST
(Track Records 79189, 1972)

A compilation of tracks from the first three Baba albums, along with some Lifehouse demos and another track. The CD reissues (first by Rykodisc in 1992, and now on Pete’s Eel Pie label/licensing deal in 2006) contain almost all the significant tracks from the three albums. One Ronnie Lane track is included, the original version of "Evolution" (later retitled "Stone" and recorded both for the Faces’ debut and for Lane’s 2nd solo album), a late night drunken walk through the song played on acoustic guitars by Lane and Townshend, that many feel is the definitive version of the song.

Selected Sessionography
[Editor’s note: from 1967-1969, while the Small Faces were signed to Immediate Records, Ronnie Lane (as well as the other three Faces) played on, wrote, and produced songs for many of the other artists on Immediate. Ronnie himself didn’t remember what all he’d played on (I asked him), and neither does Mac or Kenney. If anyone has any additions, please submit them to me by email, and we’ll list ’em–we’d like this to be the most complete listing available (but understand we probably can’t attain that goal). The list below is individual songs, unless it’s in bold italics, in which case that’s an album title.]

An unreleased version exists with a complete Lane lead vocal that might be included on some future Lane Signature Sounds release.
